Takeout and delivery: where the money goes
Fees, menu markups and tips can add a lot.
A delivery order often costs much more than the same food picked up. Delivery fees, service fees, higher menu prices on apps and the tip all add up.
Ways to spend less
- Pick up instead of delivery when you can
- Order directly from the restaurant; prices are sometimes lower than on apps
- Compare the final checkout total, not the menu price
- Keep a few 15-minute "faster than delivery" meals at home
- Plan one takeout night a week instead of several unplanned ones
Tip fairly
Delivery workers often rely on tips. Ordering less often is a better way to save than tipping less.
