Store brands: where they're worth it
Try them on basics; keep the name brands you really prefer.
Store brands are often made to similar standards as name brands and cost less. Trying them one item at a time is low-risk.
Often worth switching
- Pantry basics: flour, sugar, rice, canned goods
- Over-the-counter medicines with the same active ingredient (check the label)
- Cleaning products, paper goods, foil and bags
- Frozen vegetables and fruit
Compare by unit price
The shelf label usually shows the price per ounce or per count. That's the fair way to compare sizes and brands.
